Yet Another GigShanghai.com Rager

admin | 31 August, 2006 22:53

Yesterday was GigLive at BonBon with GigShanghai.com This isn't one of your average Shanghai parties, but a chance to see some acts you've never seen before and these acts to get their name out therein the China scene. Check out the post here.

Here's some pics from the show:

Ferriswheel

Banana Monkey

Also, I saw Goldie: aka the Godfather of Drum 'n Bass at Bon Bon (I've been seeing too much BonBon) and basically he killed it. As you already know, I am no drum and bass fan, but he did a good job moving the crowd, i walked in and my body was already mezmerized. Nuff respect to my co-worker/Miami Vice Partner Eric A. for inviting me out. Check these pics below:

Tomorrow is Friday. TGIF all the way. Five years ago, when I began studying Chinese, I never though life would be like this. An actual resident of Shanghai, China. Working 9-7, hanging out with decent people and still keeping up my Chinese... (However my English is hurting a bit.)

But not everything is all fun and games out here. there are still beuracracies you have to deal with, a lot of traffic and some crazy pollution...

Tuesday and Wednesday at 10AM from my office. Can you see the difference?

All I can say is, this is a land where things can change in an instant, and it can be scary. Jobs can change, people change, come and go, you make a fool of yourself and love it and you find the little things that make life complete. Tomorrow, I don't know what to expect, but what ever it is, it's gonna be a crazy ride.

NYC Deli

admin | 29 August, 2006 20:21

I'm sorry for biting your style, Mike and SmartShanghai.com, but I had to put this up...

NYC Deli is the illest sandwich shop in Shanghai and probably all of China right now. I love it. You can call and get what you want in English or in 国语 and get a dope sandwich just like momma used to make. I order from them so much that when i call them from work, they are like "You're Morgan, right?" Yeah... it's that bad.

Roast beef is my ish right now and you can get it hot, with swiss and cole slaw. Back up KFC (肯德基,Ken De Ji).

I don't know the guy running the show, but all i got to say is, if you find my site online about your shop, know that I am giving you props because you are running a great, honest and legitamate business. Is expansion in your plans? The people want to know!!! Holla!

Jolin is hotness

admin | 29 August, 2006 02:30

So this lady is the next pop icon in China. JOLIN... i think she is hot... i think her ribbion rhythymic gymnastic dance is a bit over my head, but she's doing her thing, got some of the dope melodies and works it better than most of the 超级女声ever could. This is too hot for Channel V.

Young Hov in Shanghai, it's so necessary.

admin | 28 August, 2006 12:29

Yes, Jay-Z is coming to Shanghai!!!

Actually... I've been aware of this for the last two months now. The Lab tried to hook it up, but some other crew got it. We thought Emma made the win, but it was actually a group called "KS." Does anyone know this group? Somebody help me out here.

Now, correct me if I am wrong, but KS only scored this gig for about 2-3 weeks now. I am a bit worried that there won't be much time to prep for the Jiggaman. Lisences, A/V prep, advertising and PR (And doing it properly!! Gotta make Jigga look good. He's a BUSINESS, man, not a businessmaaaaaan!)...

Then again, how much do these folks know about hip-hop and Jay-Z's history. Jay-Z has done more than most artists in ANY genre of music. (From Marcy to Madison Sq... He's sold out tickets like crazy.) I am a bit worried as to how he will be recieved in China and that will rely on the promoters. And China concert quality... for Jay-Z... his explicit lyrics...

This will cost a lot of money, not just money to Jay-Z, but to the gov't and whoever else is involved in making this run smoothly in a minimal amount of time. I wish them the best of luck.

I know for me, one of the few die hard Jigga fans in China, I will buy a ticket and even shell out a pretty penny for it.

There will be more great hip-hop acts coming between this fall and next year. Trust me. For now, I'm looking forward to Q-Bert this Saturday.

Fred, you will be missed.

admin | 27 August, 2006 23:48

Fred's back to the states, starting a new. I almost choked up when we said our goodbyes. He's got a new, beautiful wife and a great road to cross, as we all do.

This happens so much in China for everyone. You meet someone from a foreign land, get some good contact, and then they are gone. it's normal.

In Shanghai, you meet folks all the time - visitors, people in for the long run - all kinds of people pass through the Middle Kingdom. Some are here strictly for business and some are just trying to find themselves in this crazy, developing country. Most of the time, your relationships are limited to what one can do for you or vice-versa and not much else.

Then you got people who've seen you grow and change, seen your worst and your best and have stuck by you through thick and thin.

And then...

They out...

I'm having a hard time telling myself that he's not a 15 minute walk anymore...

Fred, I sincerely wish you all the best back home. I know a lot of folks and I got some great friends, but few people in the world grasp the true meaning of loyalty and friendship as well as you. Rememeber what I told you earlier this evening. There are many huge bridges you have to build once you are home, but Fred, you got a lot of great things going for you. Hold it down with your family and continue to make us proud!

As 2pac said: Keep ya head up, I ain't mad at 'cha, got nothin' but love 4 ya, do your thing, boi.

Spoof on Chinese Pop Videos, REALLY FUNNY!

admin | 26 August, 2006 18:08

So the actually pop singer for this song is everywhere in China. I kind of get tired of her. She is so cute, that she is too cute. Anyone know this singer's real name??? I know she's from Taiwan and she has a lot of bubble gum pop hits.

Anyway, here's a REALLY funny spoof I found online. if you want to know what Mando-pop videos look like and how ridiculously cheezy they are!

What's happenin', Shanghai?

admin | 24 August, 2006 23:53

Is it just me, or is Shanghai kinda dead this week?

Maybe its the sudden rush of heat after a nice few days of coolness...

Maybe its a quiet before the storm... (the 留学生are comming!!!)

Either way, Shanghai is a bit quiet this week and I'm happy about that.

If anyone hears of any dopeness happening this weekend, drop a comment! For all those that's looking for a chill time on a Sunday, check out The Lab BBQ happening this Sunday starting at 3pm.

BTW, I found this cool link from SmartShanghai.com. You can get a free Public Enemy CD. Fun times.

I'm really looking forward to a chill weekend and I wish you all the same!

While Jin says "Learn Chinese", Lebron Adds "Just Do It."

admin | 23 August, 2006 23:00

For real, even Lebron is doing it... MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

----------

According to the paper, James wants to greatly increase his exposure in Asia by the Beijing Olympics in 2008. That is why it was never in doubt whether or not he would play for Team USA at the world championships. In addition, the Cavaliers are talking to the NBA about opening their season in China next year.

"It is only going to help my business,'' James said. "Once I knew the world games were going to be in Japan, I knew I was going to be on board.''

James is so serious, he is taking Mandarin lessons with the hope of being able to speak it in interviews by 2008.

The following is an essay by my friend and a guy I look up to, Ted Leonsis:

Ted Leonsis Essay On China

On the set of "The Rape Of Nanking" documentary. (From left to right: Doc director master Bill Guttentag, Global business multi-tasker Ted Leonsis, Director of photography with the golden eye Buddy Squires)

I think I was getting Starbucks for our crew near Jinling Hotel when this picture was taken...

Introducing... Ted Leonsis

admin | 17 August, 2006 01:28

Recently, I've had the opportunity to ask AOL Vice-Chair and multi-US professional sports team owner and dear friend (slash Brooklyn Brother) Ted Leonsis to do a little write-up for me about China. I will put up that interview this Friday for the world to see.

For now, get to know Ted, and send him a nice little comment on his blog at http://ted.aol.com

Thank you.

(BTW, this is on my new CPU with my internet at home! More info on that to come!!!)

Can DSK rock a crowd?

admin | 16 August, 2006 16:06

YES HE CAN!!!

(You can see in this picture that it's wise not to piss him off...)

Finally gettng internet at home...

admin | 16 August, 2006 10:35

No more 网吧, no more sneaking in a post or two at the office...

It's coming...

China Telecom is the only way anyone can get internet at China. You can choose your speed of 2G, 1G, and 512kb per minute. My building kind of sucks as far as cable wiring is concerned, so I'll be stuck with the 512kb speed. And they take FOREVER to finally choose a date to set up internet in your home.

But my CPU is, well, it's pretty hot and with the internet, it will all be worth it. More on that later, wwhen I'm online at the crib!

Another day in China

admin | 11 August, 2006 11:19

My Mom (Bless her soul) and people ask me "What do you do in the day?", "What is it like working in China?" or "Is working in China like anywhere else?" Well with the exception of cultural and language differences...

It's just like HOME.

I get up, shower, throw on a tie, walk to work (while avoiding bicycles, mopeds, scooters and women with umbrellas), go up a really slow elevator, wipe the sweat off my forehead, and head to my cubicle.

I work 50 to sometimes 60 hours a week. I edit articles, project reports, proposals for other orporations, brainstorm ideas for potential campaigns for our clients, make a few phone calls and send a few e-mails. I tell people how to say things correctly in English when needed (check out Engrish.com we aren't that bad, but sometimes...), and I also set up internal programs with my co eric to help with our efficiency at work. My job is all about bridging the gap between China and the US through writing and events for visitors coming itno China. I switch from hip-hop to corporate mode like crazy over here. I should be a Gemini, but I'm an Aries.

This is pretty normal to me. Then again, you get some abnormal events...

This is a PR event Edelman threw for Dupont. of course i was working, actually mo coworker Judy is standing next to me, but what were we doing. If you scroll don the page, you can see we were cooking. it was a competition/media press conference for Dupont's new Smartcook product. We had to do some kind of perfromance and cook. This will be an online TV show people can check out on the web. (like the Iron Chef mixed with Star Search in Chinese) Judy sang a song by Teresa Teng, and I busted out some beat box. But the winner was the big guy from Taiwan to the right of the host. (the host is a popular TV personality in Shanghai, I've seen him before, but don't know his name.

Anyways, Edelman Shanghai did a great job in the project and I learned a lot about setting up venues and getting people (specifically in China) interested in a new project. I had fun. I hope soon I can set up events like that.. but for now...

China DMC is tomorrow!!!

Black People's Toothpaste - Part 3 - Whiteman's Toothpaste???

admin | 01 August, 2006 17:41

Whiteman Toothpaste

I just found this... I'm speechless...

Black People's Toothpaste - Part 2 - The Struggle Continues...

admin | 01 August, 2006 17:03

(Continued from Black People's Toothpaste.)

This is my war. This is my struggle. This is more than just toothpaste...

I walked into to work today, came back from lunch or coffee or something. (There's so much that goes on in a day in Edelman, sometimes I can't rememeber half of what I do outside of work. hehe) And I check out the TV. We got a flat screen plasma TV that hangs in the office past the reception area as you walk through the welcoming glass doors of Edelman Shanghai. Phoenix TV, a Taiwan TV Station, is always on.

Then the nightmare began, and know, it wasn't a crisis with one of our clients.

On TV, there it was. Happy people in swimming pools enjoying the water, Cheerleaders in small green and black outfits, jumping into splits and hugging the star rugby player out on the field, and everyone cheering.

Cheering...

Cheering...

Cheering...

For what?...

DARLIE TOOTHPASTE!

Images of Mr. Bojangles, Bamboozled and Blackface shot through my head while dozens of Chinese commercial actors smile with glee about their toothpaste. Do they even know???

I still have my free Black People's Toothpaste sitting here on my desk for motivation. I look forward to the day that crap goes off the market.
