Love Is In The Air?

admin | 22 May, 2006 15:29

So this last Saturday I worked at a Singles Party at Centrury Park in Pudong, Shanghai. Apparently some 3,000 people showed. All looking for love and friendship. People's parents even showed up to help find their son or daughter find that one tru love.

I worked at the party's English corner. I basically tested everyone's english before they got to mingle. Each guy got a key and gal had a lock... We always ran out of lock. Yes, there were many women there, and def some hot ones... ahhh... if I didn't have a girlfriend, I know I would be in a heap of trouble with these women. Check out this article from ShanghaiDaily.com for an inside scoop:

College Students Are Pigs Hooking Up?

admin | 19 May, 2006 19:49

Kinda funny, kinda weird, all China. Check this out:

(Translator's note: 谈恋爱 is dating in Chinese, but I'm making this a bit more for our Western audience cause college students dating is rare back West so I'll call it "Hooking Up." I think all College Alums and current students will agree with me.)

College Students = Eating + Sleeping + Hooking Up

Pigs = Eating + Sleeping

Therefore: College Students = Pigs + Hooking Up

The above College Students - Hooking Up = Pigs

So College Students that don't Hook Up are Pigs

With that in mind...

Pigs only have to Hook Up to become College Students

This is a dedication to what's hip-hop. Over the next few weeks , I'm going to run a few blogs on Hip-Hop heads taken away from us this year: Skeeter Rabbit, Proof, J Dilla and Professor X. Keep your eyes open, live and learn, and take the dreams of these brothers with you.

LA Loses Its Third Hip Hop Legend in a Month-Skeeter Rabbit

It's hard to say what exactly is going on as of late, but Hip Hop has been hit with some devastating loses as of late. From J-Dilla to Proof to Professor X, the losses have come quick, without warning and have left very little time for folks to grieve before being impacted with another unexpected demise.

Here on the West Coast, we have been hit extremely hard. The lose of DJ Dusk to a drunk driver still has LA and much of the West Coast's Hip Hop scene reeling. This past weekend, Hip Hop pioneers Afrika Bambaataa and Kool Herc made a rare appearance on the same bill to raise money for Dusk's family. They performed in LA on Friday and then in the Bay Area on Saturday. Also on the bill was Jazzy Jay. On Friday's show DJ Z-Trip and Cut Chemist came through and also represented.

The night before the LA appearance Herc, Bam and Jazzy Jay spun at Tabel 50 in New York, where Dusk had a strong following.

In an eerie sense of Deja Vu, while these Hip Hop pioneers and icons were paying tribute to DJ Dusk and others were still trying to make sense of the passing of DJ Michael Mixxing Moore who passed on the same day as Dusk, unbeknowst to many of us in attendence, another Hip Hop legend-Skeeter Rabbit of the pioneering dance group the Electric Boogaloos passed away earlier that morning...

The word is just now getting out beyond the dance community and needless to say people are besides themselves... Everyone is asking what is going on? Why is so much death hitting us... The details surrounding his death are still unclear and sketchy. We'll await an official announcement from the Electric Boogaloos and Skeeter's family

In the meantime here's some biographical information about a man who greatly impacted Hip Hop...

"Skeet started dancing as a young kid growing up in the streets of Los Angeles. Skeet started out locking and soon after started popping with his cousins Boogaloo Sam and Poppin Pete around 1978. In 1979 Skeet became an official member of the EB's and has gone on to become a pioneer and innovator of the dance styles popping and boogaloo.

Skeet is currently helping spread funk styles knowledge through shows, appearances and classes around the world.

Skeet has appeared in videos by such artists as Thomas Dolby, The Talking Heads, and Michael Jackson. His movie credits include: Michael Jackson's "Ghost," "DC Cab," "Body Rock" and "Fast Forward." He was also a featured dancer with David Bowie.

At The Lab, once again...

admin | 16 May, 2006 23:09

So now I'm working with the Lab crew on a show... Gonna happen in June. Keep your eyes open!

Ahhhhh....

admin | 16 May, 2006 09:54

Missed the Bee Gees Concert last night. Had a better night hanging out with a BBC Correspondent and an events stage manager. After a few dry martini's at Blue Frog, every deadline and pressure in the world just seems so far away. Two for one happy our can't be beat either.

Also met two gals fashion editors "Vogue" China. Cool girls. Maybe next time, I'll meet some models. Haha.

So with no day after buzz about the Bee Gees, I don't feel as bad about missing them. (Damn, I should have scalped the ticked for RMB 880). I'm sure the stub's value will go up some day.

B.G. (Before Gees)

admin | 14 May, 2006 21:19

Night Fever, Night Fever... All up in the office. Whoo Ooo...

Yeah, at the office for a bit o' editing. No fun, but my co is gone and that means this is a week for bringing it.

Bee Gees are tomorrow. Freaking That's Shanghai. Only gave me one ticket for winning their magazine quiz. (See above) Smells like false advertising me... But hey, the best things in life are free! (I suppose!)

And the Bee Gees? (Ahem... Robin Gibb?) I expect a small turnout. Can't compare with the These Guys:

(Saw the show, nosebleed seats, 10,000 screaming fans, it was golden.)

However, one of the best soundtracks out there HAS to be the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack. It's gives kind of a good build up towards bboy breakbeats. (the REAL breakbeats as far as I'm concerned!) See How Robin does tomorrow. Either way, fun times will be had.

Must work now. Leave me alone, blog!

I got a date with the rain...

admin | 12 May, 2006 15:44

It's rainning, again. We had our moment in the sun in Shanghai yesterday after continous down pour over the past week. Now, the sky is crying, and it just plan sucks...

Shanghai weather is weird. There is a whole month of cloudy, rainy, muggy, and stuffy weather here called 黄梅天 (Huang Mei Tian). It's Shanghai's stupid answer for a real Spring. WTF? Could it be due to... Pollution?

One good thing... I just won tix to see...

Do not look directly into his eyes...

Doh! You did it.

So yeah, I won the tix for answering two questions from That's Shanghai magazine. I am not a huge fan of the Bee Gees but I do enjoy listening to the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack. (which I copped in BK 2 years ago for $2). Don't know where I'm sitting for the show, but hopefully the spot is alright.

After work is 100 kuai (USD $12.50) Martini Happy Hour at the Mariott. Two hours of any Martini you want, as many you can drink. I did it last week and man... It was good.

Wonder if we'll do Hooters again... Yes, Hooters is in Shanghai. A corny concept, with some freaky Chinese ladies with tight T-shirts and ridiculously small shorts (see above) after old white guys with money, but the food is amazing. Has to be the best fried chicken in China. Degrading, maybe. Marketable, definitely. They are building a new chain in Pudong.

(I know, I have a girlfriend, and yes, I was at Hooters, and guess what? She was there with me! Matter fact, it was her idea to head to Hooters. Boy, am I a lucky guy. hehe.)

So I have to work on more edits. After reading so much Chinglish, I start to sound like an ESL student rather than a former ESL teacher. Weekend... must... come... NOW!

Ted

admin | 11 May, 2006 00:07

I know this guy named Ted. He's not just some guy... He's a Brooklyn guy, and I'll leave it at that. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be able to get this blog goin'. He made a little piece about me sometime ago and I figured, what the heck, let me show him some love. Check out Ted's Take and drop a comment. he'll appreciate it. I promise.

** Ted, If you reading this, just rememeber we go back like Sunset Park and stinky tofu. PEACE!**

Breakin' on the M

admin | 10 May, 2006 22:39

This was on TV last night. And in Chinese... I love it.

Dog Eat Dog World

admin | 09 May, 2006 16:28

Where's the love people? Where is the depth people? Where do I begin with my thoughts of Shanghai Hip-Hop?

I know where to start. One word and only one word will put ya'll on the game: MONEY.

Whoo Kid

Did Bon-Bon and Guandii last month. Got paid something like USD 7,000 (RMB 55300, you can buy a house for that much in quite a few places in China) in one night. Whoo Kid, member of 50 Cent's G-Unit, and arguably the mixtape king of New York is a weak example of a party / scratch DJ.

Based on what I've read about him, he is a good, well-mannered, and smart man. But his talent isn't exactly in his skill to rock a party, his talent is in 关系(guan xi, relations). He gets music before anyone else and that's cause he knows folks. I think that still makes him a DJ in one sense. But his mixtapes lack that "mix" that keeps the party flowing in a club. You won't hear him scratch so he can't get into any competitions with DMC... SO what does he have that can make up for these widely know talents?Connections.

This saddens me however... Why? In NY, you would never see so much hype over Whoo Kid coming to the 40 / 40 Club to DJ. Shanghai you do. Exhibit A:

Do a lot of damn advertising. (by the way 大龙 is the man. Check out Getaway on CCTV) The advertising get so much out here that sometimes that you don't wanna see the show, but you have to cause its everywhere. Remind you of anything???

Anyway, I think I've made my point here. with advertising... What's missing is hip-hop history and getting the kinds out here to learn that this hip-hop ish didn't all start with G-Unit or Jigga. It was years of hardship and struggle to create a perfect artform. It was blasting speakers out the backs of trucks and basement jams and block parties. It was toying with this, and if that didn't work, you keep trying until you stumble on some noize that's hot...

The struggle. That's all. This is why I fully support places like:

I dunno... We'll see where this all goes... Check the next blog, I think you'll like this one...

China: More Bloggers Than You Can Shake A Chopstick At.

admin | 08 May, 2006 16:07

China to have 60 million bloggers by end of 2006

Sat May 6, 3:05 AM ET

Blogging is booming in China with the number of bloggers expected to hit 60 million by the end of this year.

China is the world's second-largest Internet market after the United States with more than 110 million users. A survey by Chinese search engine Baidu.com put the current number of blog, or Web log, sites at 36.82 million which are kept by 16 million people, the official Xinhua news agency said on Saturday.

The number of Chinese bloggers is expected to hit 60 million by the end of this year, Xinhua said, quoting a report on China's media industry by the prestigious Tsinghua University.

Zhang Xiaorong, strategy development director of "Bokee," which was set up in 2002 and claims the biggest share of China's blogging market, said his company adds about 100,000 blogs a day.

"The expected 60 million bloggers would account for more than half of China's 110 million netizens," Xinhua quoted Zhang as saying.

The university report forecast the number of bloggers in China would hit 100 million by 2007. Xinhua did not elaborate.

Although the industry has invested heavily in blogs, none of the blog service providers are making profits, the report said.

A recent report by the Internet Society of China showed nine percent of bloggers write every day, 29 percent write once to three times a week, while 35 percent write four to six times a week, Xinhua said.

The growing stable of e-scribes has attracted homegrown firms and foreign giants like Microsoft, Google and Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news)

But the Communist Party's propaganda mandarins are obsessed with control and have closed down some outspoken blogs. Chat forums and online bulletin boards are routinely monitored for controversial political comments and sensitive words such as "freedom" and "democracy" are censored.

Back From Vacation

admin | 07 May, 2006 20:32

Back from vacation. China's Labor Day vacation is sadly over. It's back to the 9-5 (9-9 rather) and the hustle and bustle of the Shanghai city streets. Hangzhou was fun and hanging in Shanghai was a blast as well. Saw an exhibit on National Geographic photography called "Beyond The Vision" last Friday. It was great to check out a photo exhibit in China with the lady. The only dark moment of that day was... well... the experience of viewing a photo exhibit in China.

Why do people take pictures of displayed pictures? Tacky... I know what you are using that camera phone for, ma'am! Why do people stand SO close to the photos? I can't see behind your head, man!!

I know it sounds like a total "China rant", but it was really funny seeing people tak pictures of the art on the wall... but then again... the museum didn't sell prints downstairs... something else I had a problem with... But this is a step towards Chinese seeing the rest of the world in a full, vivid form, and these's no better way to do that than with National Geographic.

I've been a National Geographic memeber since I can rememeber. Thanks to Godmommy Kay. The smell of a fresh copy of National Geographic still sticks to me and the eyes of the Afgani girl... that hit's home.

I have to admit, Shanghai is truly stepping up it's artisitc side.

Oh, and also... Just Blaze is coming to town this weekend... I may be in Nanjing though... Must wait and see.
